How to stay connected and online in Morocco

Many riads, hotels, tourist restaurants and cafes have free wifi, usually secured with a password. However, not all are fast and reliable.

If you want to avoid expensive costs by using your home network, you can buy a Moroccan SIM card. Telecom companies offer prepaid SIM cards, which can easily be recharged with credit or data, when/if you need.

The 3 main companies are Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco and Inwi. These rely on 3G and 4G. The internet speed is fast and network coverage is good, although it can be slower or non-functional in some remote areas.

The prices are only around MAD 10 (around 1 euro) for 1GB, MAD 20 (around 2 euro) for 2GB and MAD 30 (around 3 euro) for 3GB etc.

The cards can be bought from approved resellers at airports, retail outlets, supermarkets, stores and gas stations. Ask them for the best package for you, either you want to make calls or just use the internet. You need to show your passport and register your phone number with the retailer and your telephone number is already active when you buy it.

We have good experiences with using Orange in the desert.

WhatsApp

Most Moroccans use the free app WhatsApp to call and text (via internet). This can be useful to download on your mobile, if you want to contact your hotel, tour operator, restaurants etc.
