Morocccan currency

The currrency in Morocco is called dirham and is usually written as MAD or Dh.

The currency is non-convertible, which means that you cannot take the currency out of the country (only a small amount). Also, it is not possible to to exchange dirhams in other countries than Morocco. In other words, only when you are in Morocco, you can withdraw the Moroccan dirham from ATM machines or banks.

Payments in Morocco is usually done with cash. ATM machines are easy to find in the cities.

In the cities mostly, more and more places accept visa and credit cards. Often riads/hotels, restaurants and some shops accept payment by card, but it is always advisable to check this upfront. If you are travelling out of the cities, you should carry cash.

Backup: It is a good idea to bring a small amount of euro as a backup. Let’s say if you don’t find an ATM machine straight away when you arrive to Morocco and you need to pay the taxi from the airport.

Withdrawal from ATM: When using ATM machines, you can only withdraw a maximum of MAD 2,000 per transaction. However, there’s no limit on the number of transactions you can make, so you can withdraw MAD 2,000 multiple times from the same ATM if you need more cash.
